Lichens & Mosses: Seminar in the Eifel
Have you already heard of the scraggy wrinkled spruce? And do you know how to distinguish lichens by taste? Not yet? Then discover a new universe with expert Dr. Dorothee Killmann! After a brief theoretical introduction at the Forest Academy, we'll head out into the rustic forest of the municipality of Wershofen, which is home to a large number of lichens and mosses. With the help of a light-up magnifying glass and a field guide, we'll delve into an unknown world full of beauty.
Seminar content:
Lichens and mosses have been used by humans for centuries, for example as important sources of dyes, as natural bandages, as healing medicines, and even as deadly poisons. Today, they play a particularly important role as bioindicators of air quality and forest management. An introductory, richly illustrated lecture will provide participants with an initial insight into the world of lichens and mosses. The ecology, distribution, and uses of selected species will also be presented. A subsequent excursion will demonstrate the most common and easily identifiable species in the field using illuminated magnifying glasses and identification guides.
In between we fortify ourselves with coffee and cake.
Please bring weatherproof clothing.
